He hasn't been eating very well for about a week, and the past 3 days has been very lethargic - not himself. I took him to the vet this morning and it is not good. The bloodwork didn't give a complete diagnosis, but his red blood count is very low and he has a fever. The vet said this is either caused by infection or cancer. I'm giving him antibiotics at home. If he can survive the weekend, the prognosis is better. Basically I have to prepare myself to let him go.
I always dread this point in a pet's life. They're only with us for such a short time.
ReplyDeleteA very short time with Snowy. He was 3 when I adopted him from the SPCA in 2006. A wonderful cat - calm & affectionate. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but he is fading. I have invoked St. Francis.

ReplyDeleteSnowy is gone. I researched acute anemia in cats, and the causes are injested toxins, tick bites, infection, feline leukemia, feline aids and bone marrow cancer. He was not improving with the antibiotics, hadn't eaten more than a few bites of food, hadn't drank any water or used the litterbox for days. If it were an infection, we would have seen some improvement, but he was still very sick, fevered and listless. FeLV and FIV are both contagious to the other cats, and while there is treatment for bone marrow cancer, it would probably only give him a few more months. I had to make the decision to not let him suffer anymore. Though he had been tested for FeLV and FIV before, we needed to make sure he hadn't contracted it. The test was negative. Good-bye Snowy. You've been a joy to have in our home for 3 years and you will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry. But you did the right thing. )c;
ReplyDeleteSnowy is with Mom now. They both no longer have any pain.
ReplyDeleteIMHO no matter what you believe the "no more pain" part is where I find solace.
