Using Open Office on laptop

Nice program and it is free.  I've had one minor issue.  I saved the documents in the default (.odt) format, then couldn't open them in Word.  You have to use the option to save as a Word97/2000/XP (.doc) file.

  1. That's the major thing about today's technology I find annoying. Different manufacturers use different formats and language and make it almost impossible to move from one format to another. Then there's the fact that today's technology will be ancient in 3 years and at death's door in 5 years. )c;

  2. OO will open any MS Office document, but will not recognize any macros. I just have to remember to save in the MS format, not the OO format

  3. Another issue with OO. MS Word offers synonyms, which is a very handy tool right now for my writing assignments. SWriter does not offer synonyms.

  4. Just one of the problems that irk me about computers. I could understand MS not translating an Apple file but I'd like to be able to at least read plain old script documents on my computer no matter where they come from.

  5. I found the shortcut for synonyms at openoffice.org - Ctrl-F7 - but it is much easier in Word to right click and select from the synonym suggestions. I haven't figured out how to view the header & footer. I know I needed to put page number and truncated title in the header of APA style papers. There are some free templates I can try.

  6. To further the aggravation I recieved a flyer which I attempted to copy into my printer. Well the flyer must have been put together by some other program than MS because the heading was all distorted. If I had known I could have compensated by printing it with some other program but of course the source never mentioned how it was originally printed.
