Storytelling

I am taking a class titled "Healing, Growth & Transformation through Story" as part of my required annual addictions counselor training.  I signed up for this course because it sounded like fun.  In addictions, a client's recovery often involves telling their own story.  I may not be able to use it in doing assessments, but I'm sure I can use it in life.  I never thought of myself as a storyteller, but have been an avid reader since childhood.  Stories have been a way for me to get outside my limited existence, and into strange new worlds.

  1. My wife is studying to be a writer. I read both her writings as well as those of others she takes classes with. They've also formed there own 'writing support groups' which is kind of cool.

    One of the most powerful short story writers in one group writes stories about a late, beloved friend who died of cancer. She, as others in the group say, finds writing about hurtful experiences while it may not expell the hurt it sure helps them to live with it.

    Maybe more people should just write and not worry about what somebody else thinks of it. Prose, poetry, who cares. Just write.

  2. About a year ago, I started keeping a personal journal. Some of the things I write are OK for blogging, while others are not meant to be public. I resisted journaling because I had a bad experience with a diary in my teens. I wrote poetry in high school, and recently found a poem I had written to an old boyfriend. I used to write things and stash them, then be so embarrassed when I would find it months or years later. Now I use online storage and password protect.

  3. You like Science Fiction, I like Murder-Mystery. But in the end, we read for enjoyment and relaxation. I often think that I can write as well as some of the
    stories that I read. I started writing a fiction novel several years ago. Then my
    laptop crashed and I lost all of my work, but it is still in my head. Perhaps when I retire, in a few years, I will start it again. I also have fun with my grand daughter,
    making up silly stories. It keeps the imagination active, and makes me feel like a kid again. Try it sometime, with Aaron and Alex. Start a story and take turns with them, adding to it. It can be fun!

  4. I like Mystery (murder, detective) and Romantic Suspense/Paranormal, but Sci-fi & Fantasy is my favorite. I read The Lord of the Rings in high school, and watched every episode of the original Star Trek

  5. Only ever saw the original Star Trek in reruns. I did not have a TV when it was first on. (c;

  6. We had a black & white. I saw a few of them first run, but mostly in reruns.

  7. Yeah, B&W here too. The new reconditioned TOS episodes are great. Both color and sound have been cleaned up. On top of that they're releasing a digitally remastered TOS. It'll probably cost a small fortune for the entire series. (c;
